Our third semi-annual girls’ weekend happened in Padre Island, and there were a few stowaways, shall we say:   Anthony, my nephew, and my dad.  Which meant that naps were part of the daytime routine, football occasionally blared on the television, and movie options included “Bride of Frankenstein” (What? that’s a chick-flick! my dad insisted…).  On the plus side, we enjoyed afternoon gin and Sonics (mango slushies and gin!  yes!), walked along the beach, and we convinced my dad to take his boat out of winter hibernation to give us all a fantastic ride.  And Anthony, well, he’s adorable.  We bonded over trains.

During our visit, my sisters and I dug through two tubs of Granny’s quilting fabric that my mom brought.  Since Granny has downsized her 90+ tubs of fabric, we are dealing with a serious surplus.  We came up with a project that we could finish before the weekend was over: party banners!  They are adorable.  We all shared a pattern I had found years ago, but everyone had their own unique touch.  We all teased Megan about her inefficient use of fabric and her unique flowers that all managed to include a divet, and there were many jokes regarding No Floppy Flowers!  which made us all collapse into fits of giggles.  It was hysterical.  Now we each have a creation that can only remind us of what a fun weekend it was.  And Mom, because she is a sewing rock star, made us each aprons.  Thanks, Mom!

And I hooked us all up with some Aggie paraphernalia before I left Texas.

Ah… fast forward several days, and I’m back in Portland, where we are wearing jackets and fleece and the sun sometimes shines.  It was Martin Luther King Day - a holiday, but not everyone’s holiday – just the kids and me, because Matt had to work.  Boo.  So I took them on a hike around Reed College, since I had never been there.  It was a lovely day, and a lovely hike.  I parked somewhere on a neighborhood street that was pretty nondescript.  I recorded the street names in my phone so that I could easily remember where it was.

We were having such a good time.  The kids made up a play at the amphitheater there, and I just sat and watched.  There were many battle scenes.

And then, after our snacks were gone, and Leo had two “nature pees” (his first ever since potty-training.  Oh, but boys are so much easier when it comes to peeing in the woods…), we were all tired and hungry and ready to get back.  But where was my pesky van?  Dammit, really.  I kept trying to get a signal on my phone so that I could track us through GPS, but alas, we were going in circles.  GPS doesn’t have a good map of trails.  Leo was tired and required me to carry him – and coincidentally, both of my hiking shoes gave out.  Seriously, they opened up hobo style, like two quacking ducks attached to my feet, eating up all the dirt and collecting dust and grime inside my socks and between my toes.  Weighed down by the weight of my two-year old and my shoes’ soil collection, I was desperately reaching my phone up in the air with my other hand to get a signal to try to find the van.  Meanwhile the other two lagged behind, whining and dragging their heels.  Ay yi yi.  We finally tracked down the van.  My first and last ever solo-hike with these three.  And I still haven’t replaced those shoes.  I think I earned another girls’ weekend.  Or two.  Onward.

2014: a lively beginning

Okay, it’s September, and 2014 has just four months left.  It’s been such a busy year that I neglected my only venue for writing and recording thoughts and memories.  But I’ll attempt to shake the dust off this blog, mostly to remind myself to take more pictures and to reflect regularly on what an incredible life this is.  It’s like a New Year’s resolution in September.

So, speaking of New Year’s… about nine months ago, we hosted this raucous celebration to welcome in the year 2014.  My brother and I made a batch of posole (which disappeared in no time), we played wii dance and kid-friendly movies in our garage, and our living room came alive as we all counted down the seconds until 9 o’clock (East Coast New Year’s) so that the kids could participate and folks could drive home before midnight if they chose.  The best part – two words: photo booth.  We rigged Matt’s ipad in our office with some zany costumes (thanks again, Aunt Ayme), and this is a slice of what transpired.

December 2013 album: traditions

We landed our 8-foot Noble Fir at a Christmas tree farm west of town just after Thanksgiving.  Truth be told, I think it gave me a headache all month.  But it was beautiful.  Next year, maybe a Doug fir?

And a funny thing happened one day in early December: it snowed!  The kids and I took a walk in it while Dean was at school.  We were somewhat unprepared for this change in the weather.  Fiona wore Dean’s fleece, and Leo wore Matt’s cap, since that’s all I could find at the moment.  It would melt the next day, so we had to take advantage of it quickly.  Little did we know, a snowstorm awaited us in 2014.

We saw Peter Pan this December, too.  It was Leo’s first time to see it.  He was a little unsure about the pirates, but by the time it was over, he wanted to meet Captain Hook.  Fiona wanted to meet Wendy.

We went by Pioneer Square again this year so that we could visit Santa.  He is so beautiful!  Leo did much better this year compared with last year, and no tears were shed.

They all remembered that last year I bribed them with roasted almonds after our photo, so we treated ourselves again this year too.  Guess it’s a tradition now…

We made Grandma’s cookies – the official smell of Christmas!  Can’t wait to do this again.  The secret is to let the dough sit in the refrigerator for at least a day, and then break it up with more anise tea when you’re ready to roll them.  Hands down, it makes the cookies softer.  Oh the messiness and yumminess of making Grandma’s cookies with these three.

This year, Oma and Papa spent Christmas with us.  We had so many fun adventures with them, including a transit day downtown where we took the bus, the streetcar, the light rail, and the aerial tram.  Dean had to be convinced that he would be okay to ride the tram – he was really freaked out by the cables and the height.  But at last, he relented and it wasn’t all that bad!

We unpacked a fun box of costumes from Aunt Ayme – Professor Dumbledore, Queen Amidala, Mickey Mouse, a matador...  We are looking forward to future Halloweens and any time we feel like a transformation.  These costumes would come in handy on New Years…

And what else?  Oma and Papa gave us a night out to do some last minute Christmas shopping, stay in a hotel downtown, go to a movie and spend a lovely night out.  Best gift ever.

Merry Christmas to our munchkins.

November 2013 album: celebrating life and giving thanks

I’ve been trying to make a go of “Dia de los Muertos” for the past two years.  This year, we got fancy and made some tissue paper marigolds along with our skulls, photos, and offerings.  It was a festive memorial, and another chance to talk about all of our loved ones who have passed away.  This year, we added photos of Aunt Terri, and I was grateful to share some memories of her with the kids.

November is Fiona’s birthday month, and she unknowingly did us a favor by requesting the exact same party as Dean.  So we kept the knight obstacle course set up in the backyard, recreated dragon eggs, and I retold my story of Dragonella.

Her cupcakes were surrounded and defended by knights, and we were all sporting some sweet knight tattoos by the end of her party.

On Fiona’s actual birthday, Matt and I picked her up from preschool and took her out to our favorite lunch spot, the Lair Hill Bistro, which is just a hop from my work, but since it’s not downtown, parking is free and available, and the food is yummy.  Plus they serve a homemade mac and cheese, so Fiona was a pretty happy girl.  And a proud five-year-old!  We can’t believe the day is here – she is truly one whole handful.

How many times does a person blow out candles in this house?  We can’t celebrate just once.  On the evening of her birthday, Fiona got more cupcakes and opened some presents – which included superheroes and a stuffed elephant.

And other big news this month – Leo is potty training!  We officially kicked off on Veteran’s Day weekend, which was a four-day weekend for me, and the perfect time to keep my eye on Leo, making him sit every 30 minutes or so.  By Monday, I was confident enough to take all three kids to Hollywood for the Veteran’s Day parade, and surprisingly, no accidents happened!  Which is so hard to believe, since I went completely unprepared.  Leo is ready to be rid of diapers.  That seriously makes two of us.

And, Matt and I must have gone on a date.  Well, here’s a picture that proves it.  Not sure where we were headed, but it probably had to do with the Rotary auction.

The kids helped me sew a tree skirt in anticipation of landing an 8-footer in December.  They all make excellent models.

And on Thanksgiving, I am thankful for this crew.
