January 2014 album: Girls (ahem) weekend and an epic hike

Our third semi-annual girls’ weekend happened in Padre Island, and there were a few stowaways, shall we say:   Anthony, my nephew, and my dad.  Which meant that naps were part of the daytime routine, football occasionally blared on the television, and movie options included “Bride of Frankenstein” (What? that’s a chick-flick! my dad insisted…).  On the plus side, we enjoyed afternoon gin and Sonics (mango slushies and gin!  yes!), walked along the beach, and we convinced my dad to take his boat out of winter hibernation to give us all a fantastic ride.  And Anthony, well, he’s adorable.  We bonded over trains.

During our visit, my sisters and I dug through two tubs of Granny’s quilting fabric that my mom brought.  Since Granny has downsized her 90+ tubs of fabric, we are dealing with a serious surplus.  We came up with a project that we could finish before the weekend was over: party banners!  They are adorable.  We all shared a pattern I had found years ago, but everyone had their own unique touch.  We all teased Megan about her inefficient use of fabric and her unique flowers that all managed to include a divet, and there were many jokes regarding No Floppy Flowers!  which made us all collapse into fits of giggles.  It was hysterical.  Now we each have a creation that can only remind us of what a fun weekend it was.  And Mom, because she is a sewing rock star, made us each aprons.  Thanks, Mom!

Ah… fast forward several days, and I’m back in Portland, where we are wearing jackets and fleece and the sun sometimes shines.  It was Martin Luther King Day - a holiday, but not everyone’s holiday – just the kids and me, because Matt had to work.  Boo.  So I took them on a hike around Reed College, since I had never been there.  It was a lovely day, and a lovely hike.  I parked somewhere on a neighborhood street that was pretty nondescript.  I recorded the street names in my phone so that I could easily remember where it was.

We were having such a good time.  The kids made up a play at the amphitheater there, and I just sat and watched.  There were many battle scenes.

And then, after our snacks were gone, and Leo had two “nature pees” (his first ever since potty-training.  Oh, but boys are so much easier when it comes to peeing in the woods…), we were all tired and hungry and ready to get back.  But where was my pesky van?  Dammit, really.  I kept trying to get a signal on my phone so that I could track us through GPS, but alas, we were going in circles.  GPS doesn’t have a good map of trails.  Leo was tired and required me to carry him – and coincidentally, both of my hiking shoes gave out.  Seriously, they opened up hobo style, like two quacking ducks attached to my feet, eating up all the dirt and collecting dust and grime inside my socks and between my toes.  Weighed down by the weight of my two-year old and my shoes’ soil collection, I was desperately reaching my phone up in the air with my other hand to get a signal to try to find the van.  Meanwhile the other two lagged behind, whining and dragging their heels.  Ay yi yi.  We finally tracked down the van.  My first and last ever solo-hike with these three.  And I still haven’t replaced those shoes.  I think I earned another girls’ weekend.  Or two.  Onward.

sew mama, sew!

Maybe it's nesting, or maybe I just know that sometime soon, our entire world will be rocked again, and my plate will be full. So I'm doing what my internal clock is telling me to do:  I am sewing.  A lot.  Last week, updated curtains, this week - matching pillow covers!  The envelope design uses every last inch of leftover floral fabric and the rest is my endless supply of rust-colored curtain fabric (why do I have so much?)...  Anyway, here they are.

Next on my list: kitchen curtains!  Stay tuned...

curtain refresh

Updated curtains!
Here's my latest belly picture: 33 weeks.

Now, the curtains: I made the original panels a LONG time ago - it was my first big sewing project, using an old Montgomery Ward machine that someone donated to me to make curtains for our apartment windows in Seattle.  They have moved with us since, but they barely fit the windows in our house.  Plus they were starting to fray at the bottom, so I thought they could use a little update.  We always had two panel types: the gold stripe and the rust corduroy - I'm not sure why we did this originally - perhaps because we were in graduate school and we couldn't afford to do the whole thing with the gold stripe?  Now they are much longer and have an added floral panel at the top to let in some light and tie the two panel types together.

For kicks, here is a glimpse of the old curtains (and some more preggo pics)...

This was taken a few months ago - same shirt!  smaller belly...

Santa’s workshop

For Christmas this year, we made a felt board for each of the kids with three different stories and some people, paper-doll style. I found silhouette images online, printed them out, cut some templates, and went to town.  I never usually work with felt, but this is fun!  Matt made the boards with thin plywood and we glued the green felt backing.  The only sewing required were the pouches in the back to hold all the pieces.

They were getting creative, mixing and matching the pieces.  Dean thought that the wolf and the dog should play together, the people should live in the house with a cat, and the little red hen story needed a pig.
I am such a fan of homemade presents.  I also somehow managed to sew three pajama sets for Dean, a knight tunic (Matt designed the special “D” shield), and a skirt for Fiona.

Is it nesting?  Last year we cranked out a kitchen with a cart, a faucet, some door knobs, and leftover marmoleum from the kitchen floor – all of which was collecting dust in the basement.  That was all Matt’s creation, though I sewed some play food with leftover fabric scraps.  Check out the spaghetti, bacon, eggs and pancakes with butter!  I think we just like pretending to be Santa’s workshop.

I’m definitely back in my sewing and crafting groove for now – one last hurrah before baby is born.  Now it’s time for more curtains.

busy Bernina

This has been a busy month for my Bernina!  Besides curtains, I am sewing up a mess of clothes for my two munchkins, who are both growing super fast.  Luckily, those sewing blogs came in handy when it came to figuring out how to transfer sewing patterns so that I can keep using them even when my kiddos' sizes get larger and larger.  Large scale tracing paper from my undergraduate architecture studios also came in handy.

I think it's been a fun diversion, since the weather this month has certainly not cooperated, considering it's June and I'm still parading around in fuzzy socks (can't. let. go.) and fleece.  What is going on?  Dean had to be convinced to wear shorts today (it's finally sunny).  I think it's been so long, it actually was uncomfortable territory for him.  But I digress...

So here are the finished products:  Pajama pants, dress, skirt, wall panels...

Dean's pajama pants.  Dinosaurs, monkeys, and I also did trucks!  These have been so easy.  Dean has even picked out some more fabric for pajama shorts - it WILL get warmer.  soon.  Here are some action shots.

Fiona's [summer] dress, skirt and wall panels.  Girl clothes are so easy!  Actually, the dress was harder than the pattern claimed, but, look!  It's done!  And I probably have another month or so before she outgrows it (by then it will be cold again...).  The skirt I made from an online tutorial with some leftover scraps from her wall panels.  We have finally started decorating her room - which she has occupied for a couple of months already.  It was time, pobrecita.

it's curtains!

[updated with photos]

I finally got around to finishing my curtain!  Just in time to meet my self-imposed deadline.  I've come to realize two things while finishing this project:
    1.  Misunderestimation.  Yeah, I know that's not a real word.  I haven't been really honest with myself on how much I'm taking on in my life.   Besides my blog lists that I keep adding to, Matt and I are also trying to finish constructing our upstairs closet while re-designing and re-building one-third of our backyard.  My own lists never seem to take all of these other things into account.  We just ordered a new fence (he and his dad just ripped out the old), and we've dug out and built a new sand box, plus some fun climbing and play areas for the kids a la pea gravel.  This yard has been such a challenge for me, but I think it's finally come along for such a small and shady space.  It's miles away from what it was four years ago.  Not to mention our nearly-complete closet!

    2.  Blog bog.  Reading blogs about sewing isn't as gratifying as sewing, and it doesn't get me very far in my sewing projects.  I know, that kind of sounds rocket-science, but I thought I'd throw it out there.  I picked up a handful of good sewing blogs, which I love to look at!  But as soon as I stopped looking at them for a week, I finished my curtains.  Plus I started and finished these adorable pajama bottoms for Dean, featuring a sock-monkey print, and I started and finished a lovely curtain for Fiona's room.  Yippee!

        Nine goals revisted

About these project management classes... I found out with my good, hard-earned money, that all these goals and lists I keep making aren't really achievable if I don't set a deadline.  Oh.

So, if you, gentle readers of the blogisphere, internets, and cyberspace recall, I've made a few proclamations since starting this blog back in January.   Nine, to be exact - that have basically been reduced to nothing unless I quickly revive them with some serious targets and deadlines.  Ahem.

        So here goes:
        1. More time with family and friends.  Weekly check-ins and social events!   (This is my favorite goal.)
        2. More time for introspection.  Weekly blogging.
        3. Finish my wedding album.  by August 12, 2010 (10 year anniversary!)
        4. Finish my bedroom curtains.  by May 15
        5. Join a gym, for crying out loud.  Ride bike once a week: alone to work or with 75 lbs of children to neighborhood park.  I'm starting small here... look at all these other goals!
        6. Purchase life insurance.  by May 30
        7. Finish estate planning.  by May 30
        8. Write children's book on cascarones. Uh... 2011?
        9. Become certified in project management.  by May 28 (last day of class)
Geez, this got really ambitious.  I'm going to bed.  In the next sixty minutes. or so.

        Sewing and blogging

It's taken a while to get back to my curtains, and not because I don't have time in the evening to work on them - I just can't seem to get motivated to do it.  I finally spent the last two nights getting reacquainted with my lovely Bernina, and the curtains are coming along - two panels are sewn, and all of the grommet holes are marked (which took a few tries after an embarrassing and frustrating math error on my part).  All that's left is cutting the holes, fastening the grommets, marking and sewing the hem, and hanging the finished product.  Then, voila! - no more hiding behind my headboard while I'm getting dressed - phew!

The fabric is from IKEA - and I have some pillow shams that I made several months ago to match.  They compliment the lovely orange wall in my bedroom...  a color which for some reason we had a whole bucketful when it was time to paint our bedroom, and we decided to save money by using what we had.  I think Matthew had this idea a few years ago to paint a large orange rectangle in the living room to contrast with the pale green walls - which we still might do someday; we definitely have enough paint. Photos of completed project coming soon, hopefully...

I've been a little more interested in blogs about sewing rather than actually sewing these days.  Here are my favorites so far: Keyka Lou, Sew Retro, Sew Chic, Polka Dot Overload, and House of Marmalade.  These are all mainly clothes and mainly vintage; I am not sure why that's peaking my interest right now, but it has been so inspiring to peek into the creative outlets of others.

Sewing and blogging have integrated nicely in this era. Apparently, it is possible to make time for both.

        listmaker part II

Tracking my earlier list... I have decided not to join a gym for various reasons.  I'm going to try some fitness classes offered at my work.  My wedding album has come to a halt to make way for curtain-making, which I am about a third of the way through.  And I'm spending way too much time on the computer.  But obviously not blogging.

It turns out that I'm not so great at blogging.  I am, however, very good at list-making.  So I will continue to do that.

I have some new goals, which I have been spending lots of time on, so let's just attribute my slow progress on previously-stated goals to these front-burner, I-am-now-an-adult goals.
        1. Purchase life insurance.  We're not sure where to go here - is it better to use a broker and find the best deal, or to go through our regular bank?  It's a little unsettling.  But either way, we need to do something.  Our financial advisor gave us some leads.
        2. Finish Estate Planning.  Matthew and I have been meeting with a lawyer, and it's going really well.  Which is good, because it's costing a lot of money.  I am totally in the wrong field.  So at the end of this, we will each have a will and a trust for the children.  The incentive for this is that if we do nothing, and something should happen to us, the state will decide what happens to our kids and all of our assets will be liquidated with no parameters for how any of it will be used.  Yikes.  Plus, Matt and I need a second honeymoon.  Though now we won't be able to afford one.  Hmmmm...

        listmaker

I have a few nagging things to finish up - and some things to start - so here's my quick list:

        1. Finish my wedding album.   It's been 10 years!  This is a photo of me and my sis Gina, as I was making my first real attempt at getting this done during our girl's weekend.  I have been collecting all the photos, the album, the paper, and some album bling - like stickers and paper flowers -  for years.  I think I told myself I would finish it before I finished grad school, or at least before we were married five years.  Um, nope.  Then I promised myself to finish it before we started our family.  Or before we had #2.  Oops.  So now I have a real goal - 08.12.2010.  That would be ten years!  Hoping I can do it.

I should really stop there, if I expect to feel like I can accomplish something soonish.  But I look up and notice that our curtains are halfway done.  The finished part is a SHEER.  It's lovely, but, um, sheer.  So goal #2 is:

        2. Finish my bedroom curtains.  I have the fabric and thread.  This should probably be more front-burner, since I often find myself changing clothes in the closet or hiding behind the headboard.  However, my sewing table is also my scrap table.  hmmmm....

        3.  Join a gym, for crying out loud.  Preferably one that has some built-in childcare, so that I can take a class on Friday.  Otherwise, I'm looking at 8pm every time I want to work out, which I may want to do, but there are usually no late classes, and I am not sure how I'll ever finish an album or curtains...

Are goals supposed to be mutually exclusive like this?
